Whether it's the touch of your lover, or the presence of the Divine, the electrical signal change within us when someone wonderful makes contact is what is being symbolised here.  Inky depths and shadowy borders are brought to life through that spiritual, emotional, physical connection.  The spark is transcendental but even on a biological level, our neurons begin to ignite with dopaminergic explosion when someone we care deeply about touches us.
