The title of the work references the rough texture in contrast to the gentle colours.  'Impasto' comes from the same root word as 'pasta', based on the Italian for 'paste' or 'knead'.  Paint has been applied in thick applications with a palette knife.  It is rougher near the bottom of the work and thins slightly towards the sky.  The pale blue, coral and cream gives the painting an impressionist sense of light.
