The painting appeared in a dream of the artist. The brilliance of the turquoise has been a consistent theme in her dreams, seemingly representing life itself in some pure form.  The contrast of the inky black could be said to emulate rock, but the painting was already in abstract when dreamed, and the principle purpose of the dark was to heighten the representation of the light streaming through the blue.  This is also true to our attitudes to life. The darkness can be a gift to enable us to see, in sharp relief, how truly radiant is the light in our lives.
